Bouquets of Hope: Finding Joy in the Little Manifestations

It’s easy to feel discouraged when we look at our gardens—or even our children—and see more weeds than growth. It can be disheartening when the challenges and negative traits seem so big, while the progress feels small or hard to see.

But the Lord has taught me to shift my focus. Instead of dwelling on the overwhelming negatives in my child’s heart, He has shown me how to notice the little positive manifestations: every small act of kindness, every polite response, every willing effort, every smile or kind glance, and every good interaction, no matter how tiny. These are like delicate little flowers—often overlooked or trampled underfoot—whispering, “Notice me! I may be small, but I want to bring you joy!”

When I gather these “florets,” I can say, “Yes, the Holy Spirit is working in her heart. I see it.” This perspective gives me the strength to face the larger challenges, knowing there is hope. Life is stirring beneath the surface in her heart, and I don’t want to crush those small blossoms with discouraging or negative reactions.

God has also helped me find joy in tending my garden, both literally and spiritually. I work in it when I can, and those moments are filled with peace. Instead of fixating on the weeds, I focus on the good work I am able to do, and it fills me with satisfaction.

Today, as I was leaving the garden, He spoke gently to my heart, prompting me to turn back and look at it, imperfections and all. He said:

*”Focus on the work I’ve already accomplished in your heart and your child’s heart. Don’t fixate on the weeds or imperfections—that will only leave you discouraged and overwhelmed. I am delighted with the growth I see in your hearts, and I rejoice over it with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17).

The progress in your garden depends on how often you tend to it. Likewise, the work I can do in the garden of your heart depends on how often you come to Me and invite Me to work in it. The growth in your child’s heart is shaped by your commitment to your home life, your reliance on Me for grace to face life’s challenges, and your willingness to let the sunshine of My love and the water of My life flow through you. As you plant seeds of My truth—words of encouragement, hope, and joy—they will take root and grow, overshadowing the weeds.”*

What are we focusing on today? Instead of the weeds, let us turn our attention to the beautiful work God has done—and continues to do—in your heart and the hearts of your loved ones. Let us collect every small floret, those signs of good seeds taking root and growing in children’s hearts. Together, these tiny blossoms form a lovely bouquet—much like the wildflower bouquets our little ones gather with love on their walks. And when they hand you one, may it serve as a reflection of the “bouquets of hope” God is offering you from their hearts.
